Summer and its heat and humidity can mean body odor – especially from our arm pits.  And, under-arm odor is equal- opportunity, so LADIES, don’t tune me out for this one!

So, getting to the PIT of the matter, why do we sweat and why does it make us smell like a goat?   Your skin has two main types of sweat glands:

ECCRINE glands:  located all over our bodies and secret mostly water and salt.  This type of perspiration generally doesn’t smell and helps to cool your body.

APOCRINE glands:   live mostly in our armpits and groin and are the “odor” culprits.   They produce a milky fluid when we are emotionally stressed.  This is also odorless, but when it combines with bacteria under your arms… well, smell ya, shouldn’t have to tell ya!

How to keep out of smell hell?

  • Wash your underarms with soap and water daily.
  • Apply antiperspirant which stops the production of sweat or deodorant, which can help mask the bacterial odor
  • Change clothing daily – once contaminated with bacteria, clothes continue to smell even if  you are clean
  • And, try to manage stress.  I know, that’s easier said than done!
