Most of us have been keeping up on the story of the two escaped convicts from the New York prison.   And, thankfully, the matter has been resolved.  There’s nothing particularly medical about escaping from prison.  But, getting along out in the big world after you escape brings up some interesting healthcare issues.

For example, what if you’re on the run with no access to food or water?  You can’t exactly breeze through the McDonalds drive through if you’re on the most wanted list.  So, how long can humans go without food and water?

Eventually, you’re going to need both but interestingly enough, you can go much longer without food than you can without water.   There are many things to factor in but in general, human can go up to eight weeks without food IF YOU HAVE WATER.  And, you can go three to five days without water.  So, do the math – no FOOD OR WATER?  You’re looking at five days, max.

So whether you’re hiding out from the law, preparing for the zombie apocalypse or just being responsible about natural disasters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s good idea to keep at least three days of water (that’s one gallon per day for each person in your home plus your pets) and three days of food on hand at all times.

So, stock up on canned goods when they’re on sale and be sure water is sealed tightly.  Check expiration dates and rotate your stock when needed.  Hopefully, you’ll never need to use your stash.  And, the upside is that you’ll never run out of canned tuna.
