So, you’re having a baby or thinking about having a baby or just having sex. Here are the things to do before you’re pregnant or as soon as you know you’re pregnant:

  1. Prenatal vitamins. They will protect your baby’s spinal cord so that it forms normally. The sooner you start the better. On the way into the bedroom before you play is good…well maybe not, but you get the drift. Seriously. This is the one time in your life that everyone agrees extra vitamins are a must so the sooner you start the better.
  2. Healthy teeth equals healthy baby. Yep. Ladies, if you have yucky teeth it predisposes your baby to low birth weight which has a lot of down sides. So visit your dentist on the way into the bedroom… just kidding. But still, minty fresh breath can only help with the kissing. You get my drift.
  3. No smoking. You need to know more?  Really? Okay, picture this: what would you do if someone put a cigarette in your three-month-old’s mouth?  You’d go all medieval on them, right?  So quit already.
  4. No alcohol or illegal drugs.  Zero.  Nada.  None.
  5. Your baby feels your stress.  Your baby’s brain feels your stress and evidence is accumulating that stress badly affects how your baby’s brain is formed.  So tell everyone in your world that you’re pregnant and let them treat you special. ‘Cause you are.
  6. As always, you are what you eat but when you’re pregnant your baby’s what you eat. So eat well. This is the one time in your adult life when we want you to put on weight. Just not too much.  Too much is not good for your baby or you. And and and, ladies: it’s harder to get rid of when you’ve delivered.  Think about it: you’ll have time for the gym, with a newborn on your hands, and you’re up all hours of the night nursing?  I didn’t think so.

The first thing to grasp is that you’re not eating for two. Not at all. This is what’s considered healthy weight gain during pregnancy:

  1. An average weight woman should gain 25 to 35 lbs total during the pregnancy.
  2. An overweight woman may need to gain only 15 to 25 lbs during her pregnancy.
  3. Underweight women should gain a little more, 28 to forty pounds.
  4. Generally, aim for 2 to 4 lbs doing the first three months and one pound a week during the rest of the pregnancy.
  5. If you’re lucky enough to be carrying twins, expect to gain 35 to 45 lbs. This averages 11/2 pounds per week after the usual weight gain in the first three months.

So what should you eat? Lots of fruit, veggies and lean protein. And don’t forget, fish is a good source of lean protein. I know you’re all aware of the mercury problem with fresh fish but salmon, anchovies, herring, sardines and trout are safe choices.  I’d recommend any of these fish while you’re pregnant, but no more than twice a week.

One final thought: pregnant women aren’t patients, so don’t let anyone treat you like one and have fun.  This is a wonderful joyous journey.  Enjoy!
