Flibanserin.  Not the easiest of drug names to pronounce, so now it’s nick-named, “Pink Viagra”.  Everyone’s thinking, “fabulous.” Finally there’s an equal opportunity arousal drug for women.

Meaning, for the first time ever, ladies, a drug that helps a woman get into the mood for intimacy, is heading to your local pharmacy.  So what’s all the controversy about?

The folks behind Flibanserin say they want to even the score.  Men have Viagra so women should have this new drug.   However, Viagra works as advertised, albeit with some manageable side effects.  Pink Viagra, not so much.  And, although Flibanserin has been given a reluctant go ahead by the FDA, study after study has shown that taking it is hardly better than a sugar placebo.  And it comes with a significant number of side effects.

So, given the importance of “amore” in everyone’s life, I believe there is a genuine need for a drug like Flibanserin.  But with the poor efficacy of this drug, it’s best we all wait for something better.   We need a drug that actually works with no or at least tolerable side effects.

Some say Pink Viagra is being blocked by sexism. I have to say that I highly doubt that.  Ladies, do you really think there are guys who’d block a drug that could make them just as happy as the woman taking it?
