Common sense tells us that spending every waking moment looking at a device screen is not healthy for children.  Even so, screen time for kids has crept up significantly in past years as more types of mobile devices allow constant access.  A Kaiser study found the average 8-10 year old spends nearly eight hours a day with a variety of different media.  And 11 hours for older children!

As if “television as babysitter” wasn’t bad enough!  And,parents want to keep kids busy with screens so THEY can have their own screen time!  What are we doing?!

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children under age two should not be exposed to ANY electronic media.  Children learn by interacting with people, not screens.  And, older children and teens should spend no more than one or two hours a day with entertainment media.  The rest of their down time should be for playing outdoors, reading, hobbies, or using their imaginations in free play.

Limiting screen time in your household won’t make you popular, but it will make a difference in your children’s development and can even bring your family closer together.
