You went to the beach and forgot the sun would be there too, so you’ve got sunburn. Now what? Unfortunately, there’s really no quick fix for sunburn. Your body will heal itself, but it’ll take a few days.   The trick for you is not to get in the way of your body as it does its thing, so here’s what to do in the meantime:

  • Dampen a towel with cool water and place it on the sunburn OR take a cool bath.
  • Keep the skin moist. Silvadene cream, aloe or moisturizing cream all work well. Avoid alcohol based creams as they just dry out your skin.
  • If it blisters – don’t touch. The last thing you need is to get an infection on top of a burn.
  • For pain – use OTC meds like ibuprofen or Tylenol.
  • Peeling skin’s a good sign so leave it alone but do pour on the moisturizing cream.
  • If the burn covers a large area, you’ve got a fever or you’re just not getting better, see your doctor.

But just because you’ve gotten sunburn once doesn’t mean you have to get it twice. So cover up while outdoors, avoid the mid-day sun and get sun block – SPF 30 or 50 will do the trick. Remember your body will “fix” the burn in time, but with each and every burn your risk of skin cancer goes up. Who needs that?
