Yes, screening works and is well worth doing if you have a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), are obese and over forty. The thing is, with DM2 you can have the disease for years and not know. Not good. Often by the time you really become symptomatic you already have some of the complications. So screening is the way to go. The best test is an early morning fasting blood sugar.

Some figures to keep in mind once you get your result. Normal is less than 100 mg/dl. You’re pre-diabetic if you’re between 100 to 125 mg/dl. Pre-diabetes does not necessarily mean you’ll become diabetic but it does mean you have your work cut out for you or you will become diabetic. This usually involves exercise and weight loss. Over 126 and you’re it. You’re diabetic. Remember it’s not the end of the world if you’re diabetic. You just have to control it, and like with any chronic disease, that’s all up to you, not your doctor.
